Lecture Overview:
The purpose of this lecture is to give an overview of the common GI problems requiring surgery during the neonatal period. A very brief overview of embryology is included as well as a brief review of assessment/physical exam. The majority of the presentation involves the description of the various GI surgical conditions presenting in the neonatal period.
Target Audience:
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of Nurses, Nurse Practitioners.
Objectives:
After participating in this program, the medical professional should be able to:

  • Understand the basic assessment principles
  • Be able to explain the various GI surgical conditions
  • Understand the therapeutic interventions for each condition
Lecturer Biography:
Nancy Mercy, MN, RNC

Miss Mercy is a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner at the Stollery Children’s Health Centre NICU, that includes a 70 bed level 3 high risk delivery center and a 16 bed level 4 surgical and cardiac center. She has over 18 years experience in neonatal nursing, including 6 years as a transport nurse and over 10 years as an NNP. In her hospital units, the NP’s do independent calls with the neonatologist on call at home. As well as managing all clinical aspects of a diverse neonatal population, Miss Mercy is also involved in ongoing staff education and development, presenting formally and informally at the bedside nursing staff.

Miss Mercy is an NRP ACoRN instructer. She is associate faculty at the University of Alberta and has taught in the undergraduate neonatal certificate course, and the MN Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program. Miss Mercy has also presented at national and regional conferences.
